Box Office: Sandra Bullock's 'Ocean's 8' Tops With $41.5M Weekend

http://nagato.mazdey.com/movie/402900/ocean-s-8.html

Ocean’s 8, starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna and Awkafina, earned a strong $41.5 million in its debut weekend. That gives it a decent 2.63x multiplier and the top debut weekend for the Ocean’s franchise. Yes, thanks to inflation, it sold fewer tickets this weekend than any of the previous Stephen Soderbergh-directed Ocean’s movies, but that’s part of the whole “not as many people go to the movies just to go to the movies” thing that I’ve essentially turned into my stump speech.

The Gary Ross-directed sequel cost $70 million to produce, below the unadjusted budgets ($85m, $110m and $85m) of the Soderbergh-directed Ocean’s movies which opened with $38m in 2001, $39m in 2004 and $36m in 2007. The opening is on par with Paul Feig’s gender-flipped Ghostbusters remake which snagged a $46m debut two years ago. That flick cost $144m to produce. The inexplicably controversial reboot tried to target adult women and kids and ended up arguably pleasing neither. Because it cost half as much, Ocean’s 8 could make the same $229m worldwide as Sony's Ghostbusters and still be a hit.

Ocean’s 8 is playing to the Bad Moms/Girls Trip/Bridesmaids crowd with no real attempts to bring in the kids. There’s a subtle joke about “you can’t be what you can’t see” representation, but I digress. It also has a genre not used to anything resembling gender parity and sheer star power thanks to Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway and the rest of the club. Nitpicks aside, the movie is damn fun and mostly pretty good. In this case, the IP is merely what gets the movie greenlit, but not what turns it into a hit.

While it’s tempting to roll your eyes at the idea of a gender-flipped redo of a boys-club franchise, A) it’s not the ladies’ fault that the first trilogy was a sausage fest and B) this one is being sold more on cast/concept than IP loyalty. Sure, there are folks showing up this weekend because of the brand or the IP. But the success of this one is far more about the mere idea of (deep breath) Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna and Awkafina starring in an ensemble heist caper.
The Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc. film played 69% female and 69% over 25, with audiences giving it a B+ Cinemascore grade but those under-18 giving it an A. Once again, big movies for/about women can do big business when studios make them. The big question mark is whether it can leg out like most of Sandra Bullock’s big commercial plays. Gravity made 4.9x its $55m debut while The Blind Side earned 7.5x its $34m opening. But even the razzed All About Steve tripled its $11m debut weekend, while Minions made 2.9x its $115m debut.

When you get to more plausible comparisons, The Heat earned 4x its $39 million debut five years ago while The Proposal earned 4.9x its $33m launch in 2009. Heck, her average weekend-to-final multiplier among her 27 wide releases is an insane 3.5x, which alone would give Ocean’s 8 a boffo $147m domestic cume. By the way, the $42 million launch was Bullock’s third-biggest opening weekend behind Minions and Gravity, Blanchett’s 11th-biggest Fri-Sun launch, Hathaway’s fifth-biggest debut, Carter’s tenth-biggest launch, Rihanna’s second-biggest behind Home, Kaling’s fifth-biggest debut and a personal best for Paulson and Awkwafina.

We’ll see how it fairs against The Incredibles 2 and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. I’m not thrilled that it dipped 4% on Saturday, but we’ll see. That Ocean’s 8 still opened this well alongside New Line's Life of the Party (which will cross $50 million this weekend), STX's I Feel Pretty (which tripled its $16m debut weekend) and Lionsgate and MGM's Overboard ($80m worldwide on a $12m budget) shows that not only are women not box office poison, there is enough of an audience to justify more than one flick aimed at adult women per season.
